How to calculate CPM

CPM means cost per mille, or cost per one thousand impressions. It is commonly used to compare the price of display, video, social media, and awareness advertising.

CPM = Campaign cost ÷ Total impressions × 1,000

A campaign costing $2,500 and delivering 500,000 impressions has a CPM of $5.00. In other words, each block of 1,000 impressions costs $5.

CPM

The cost paid for every 1,000 advertising impressions.

Cost per impression

Campaign cost divided by the total number of impressions.

Target cost

The estimated cost of the same impressions at your target CPM.

Frequently asked questions

What does a $5 CPM mean?

It means the advertiser pays $5 for every 1,000 impressions delivered.

Is a lower CPM always better?

Not necessarily. A lower CPM buys cheaper reach, but audience quality, viewability, placement, clicks, and conversions also matter.

What is the difference between CPM and CPC?

CPM measures cost per 1,000 impressions. CPC measures the average cost for each click.

How is target cost calculated?

Target cost equals total impressions divided by 1,000, multiplied by the target CPM.

Important: CPM measures the cost of exposure, not campaign profitability. Review reach quality, clicks, conversions, and revenue alongside CPM.
