How to calculate return on investment

ROI compares the net gain or loss from an investment with the total amount invested. It can be used to evaluate projects, assets, marketing initiatives, and business decisions.

ROI = (Total return − Total investment) ÷ Total investment × 100

For example, a total investment of $11,000 that produces $14,500 in final value and income has a $3,500 net return and an ROI of 31.82%.

Total investment

Initial investment plus all additional costs entered.

Net return

Final value plus additional income, minus total investment.

Annualized ROI

The compound yearly return implied by the result and investment period.

Frequently asked questions

What does a negative ROI mean?

A negative ROI means the final value and additional income are lower than the total amount invested.

What is the difference between ROI and ROAS?

ROI evaluates the broader return after investment costs. ROAS specifically compares attributed advertising revenue with advertising spend.

Why include additional costs?

Fees, maintenance, labor, and other costs increase the true investment and can materially reduce ROI.

How is annualized ROI calculated?

The calculator compounds the total return multiple over a 12-month equivalent period. It is shown only when a positive investment period is entered.
