How to build a UTM tracking link

UTM parameters are tags added to a URL. Analytics platforms can use them to identify where visitors came from and which campaign generated the visit.

Required parameters: utm_source + utm_medium + utm_campaign

Use consistent lowercase names such as google, email, or summer_sale. Avoid placing private information inside UTM parameters because the finished URL may appear in browser history and analytics reports.

utm_source

Identifies the platform, publisher, or traffic source, such as google or newsletter.

utm_medium

Identifies the marketing channel, such as cpc, social, email, or affiliate.

utm_campaign

Identifies the promotion, launch, or campaign being measured.

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

They are URL query parameters used to label marketing traffic so campaign visits can be grouped and analyzed.

Are campaign term and campaign content required?

No. Campaign term is often used for paid keywords, while campaign content can distinguish links, ads, or buttons within the same campaign.

Should UTM values use spaces?

Consistent lowercase values with underscores or hyphens are easier to read and group. This builder safely encodes values entered with spaces.

Does this tool store my URLs?

No. The link is assembled in your browser by the plugin and is not submitted to WebToolPilot.

Tip: Keep a shared naming convention for sources, media, and campaigns. Inconsistent capitalization can split one campaign into multiple analytics rows.
